From ancient Greece until today, from Homer to Ovid's themes, up to the time of Kant and Derrida, the foreigner (who arrives at the land of the Feaci narrated in the Odyssey or the island of Lampedusa today) brings with him questions about our being sedentary, he is charged with potentially threatening aspects and - as has often been said by great philosophers and writers - he offers "gifts" to those to whom he arrives.
The task that we have taken on with this work is very simply to carry out a quick survey of the theme of the hospitality of the foreigner (and, by contrast, about the nature of citizenship) in some of the great moments of the philosophical, religious and literary production of the our cultural world, from Greek-Latin antiquity to the Jewish-Christian tradition, from the reflections of the Enlightenment to post-modern deconstructionism. Who is really a "foreigner"? And what does being a citizen really mean? And the foreigner who brings threats but also gifts, what kind of gifts does he bring with him?
