An extraordinary daily life

The last work by Giuseppe Brienza on Licia and Settimio Manelli, couple of brides who for their example of faith, generosity and courage, shine before the long night of the nineteenth century

by Alessandro Tadini

anno XVII n. 4 Roma aprile 2017 (p. 73)

For the last forty years, the West is marked by a fertility rate well below the "replacement threshold" - 2.1 children on average for women - which guarantees the replacement of generations and the balance not only of quantity, but also qualitative of the population. The average European rate is currently around 1.5 children per woman.

Many scientists and intellectuals, infuriated more or less consciously of Neo-Malthusian faith, claim that such a collapse of births in the West must in fact be considered a resource, as the small number of children and the population would guarantee a better environmental, economic and social sustainability for the Earth; and that, therefore, it seems ridiculous, if not crazy, to argue that ever-expanding populations with stable, numerous and coherent institutions are a cause for success and prosperity for the whole society

George Bernard Shaw said, "You use a glass mirror to look at your face and use artwork to look at your soul", it was not for this reason that man reads, looks, looks, cries of art In any form to get to it.
Finding in front of the Catholic Diary of the Young Casali means asking questions about one's essence, society, and God.
An essential question that needs to be made before reading: must we be indoctrinated in religion to read this work? Of course, no, and above all, such a low-inflationary argument can prove profoundly intelligent, full of emotional burden and full of lights and shadows.

Anyone who wants to read this "little diary" can only go into a thick wood of questions and find his personal answers at the bottom of the path.
It is definitely an intense journey in its brevity. But we do not want to reveal it all. Defined as a "little miracle" is a fusion of poetry and religion, the latter is not always recalled, but is rather made to feel "presence," as if it were part of a continuous interrogation internally in prayer. Through this particularly intimate and musical poetical composition, Casali is particularly concerned with human errors and fake perbenism that pervades our society, on the path of man with its falls and its losses.

Father Stefano M. Manelli is the founder of the Franciscans of the Immaculate, who are constantly increasing numerically but still end up in the eye in the Vatican cyclone for reasons that still go astray. But here we are not talking about these, but about the parents of the founder, Settimio Manelli (1886-1978) and Licia Gualandris (1907-2004). They were tertiary Franciscans and disciples of another famous Franciscan, Father Pio, who did not stop them - indeed encouraged them - to generate twenty-one children. Catholic rabbits, in short, according to an authoritative definition. I am still waiting for beatification.

Father Serafino Tognetti, already superior general of the Community of the Sons of God (founded by Don Divo Barsotti), in the presentation to the book we speak of, writes that today as today also good and motivated people who attend sacraments and strive to be Good Christians, are "disgraced and scandalized" when they hear of families planning numerous children.

"Usually at the announcement of the arrival of the eldest grandparents and uncles celebrate, on the arrival of the second also, with less enthusiasm; At the announcement of the third one begins to worry, to the fourth one rebuke, if the fifth arrives despair, if they announce sixth, the bride and groom are considered irresponsible, crazy, deprived of reason and heart.

In the case of Septimius and Licia, today, at the announcement of the twenty-first son they would call the neurosis and they would be taken away with the jacket. " And who are Simius and Lydia? One of their children is best known, the ultra-eighteenth-century Stefano Maria Manelli, founder of the Franciscans of the Immaculate Conception. These two parents, who are in the process of beatification, have dedicated a book Giuseppe Brienza: Philosophy of the Life of the Servants of God, Licia and Settimio Manelli (Giuliano Ladolfi Editore, pp. 70, € 10).

La lettera che leggi te la mandaEdizione delle Heroides, Venezia 1552 Briseide a te strappata: a malapena
la mia mano di barbara ha saputo
comporre i segni greci. Dove vedi
cancellature, le hanno cagionate
le mie lacrime: ma le stesse lacrime
hanno una voce. Se un poco di te,
o mio signore e sposo, m’è permesso
dolermi, un poco mi dorrò del mio
signore e sposo. Se al comando regio
io sono stata subito concessa,
non tua è la colpa, ma tu pure hai colpa.
Infatti come Eurìbate e Taltibio
mi richiesero, subito ad Eurìbate
e a Taltibio fui data per seguirli.
Guardandosi a vicenda, si chiedevano,
muti, dove mai fosse il nostro amore.
Si poteva d’un poco differire:
un indugio era caro alla mia pena.
Ahimè! Nemmeno un bacio nel partire
ti detti: versai tutte le mie lacrime
e mi strappai i capelli. Me infelice:
mi sembrò di cadere prigioniera
una seconda volta. Spesso, elusa
la sorveglianza, volevo tornare,
ma c’erano i nemici pronti a prendere
me tremante. Temevo che, inoltrandomi,
venissi catturata ed a qualcuna
delle nuore di Priamo destinata.
Ma si doveva darmi e sono stata
data. Da molte notti sono assente,
ma tu non mi reclami: la tua ira
è lenta. Pure il figlio di Menezio,
mentre mi consegnavano, mi disse
nell’orecchio: “Perché piangi? Starai
là non per molto”. E’ poco non avermi
reclamata: perché non ti sia resa,
Achille, tu combatti! Va ora dunque
e abbi nome di amante appassionato.
